Pollution in the oceans, though not commonly known to humans, creates serious problems in our environment. Oil spills, plastic, garbage, and sewage combine together to form the major problem known as pollution. Coral reefs begin to disappear as a result of ocean pollution and many other factors. Carbon dioxide levels increase as greenhouses release gases into the air. As pollution continues to grow and become much worse, organizations create new laws to help reduce or end some of the major problems in our seas. Oil Spills disturb the environment and produce a threat to the animals living in that area. Both ships and refineries release oil into the rivers and oceans which leads to the damage and death of plants and animalsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Bottles, ropes, and nets ensnare animals and occasionally kill them. Scientists once found a turtle with a plastic band warping its shell into an hour glass shape (Casey 74). Plastic takes decades to disintegrate where it remains at th e bottom of the ocean releasing poisonous chemical into the sea (Hollar 36). The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a stretch of plastic and garbage that floats in the ocean, reaches from California to Japan (Ross). For every one ton of living creatures in our oceans, there is six tons of garbage and plastic (Earle 103). Further, Sewage and excess waste collect in the ocean and pose threats to the ecosystem. U.S. Navy ships discard their wastes into the sea (101). Sewers, manure heaps, and cattle yards dump industrial and domestic waste into the oceans for bacteria to use as their food. They multiply as take up all of the oxygen, leaving nothing for the surrounding organisms (Leggett 26). Sewage, similar to oil, covers plants until they die from a lack of nutrients (27). Sewage exposes animals to disease and presents harm to humans who eat those animals (Hollar 39). Moreover, oil, plastic, garbage, and sewage present many challenges to our oceans every day. The damage of ocean pollution r esults in the disappearance of coral reefs and the diminishing number of fish in the sea. It is owned but Barclays plc a United Kingdom company. It was the first card that came to limelight in England and was operational back in 1966. In UK alone the firm has 10.4 million customers as well as 10.8 million customers outside the U.K. (Barclays PLC., 2004) With its marketing strategy, the firms has in the recent past seen to have widen its international market, however entrance of new firm dealing with the same products and services have posed a threat to Barclaycard (Hill Westbrook, 1997). To address the uncertainty that may be associated with venturing into Ireland, the firm needs to analyze the market so that it can be in a position to maximize its capabilities by utilizing the opportunities and minimize threats identified. Strengths A strong economy of Ireland is a major strength the market has. With a stronger economy and higher rates of income, individuals do have a higher purchasing power. This will provide the firm with an opportunity to increase their sales volume. The low corporation tax which stands at 12.5% encourages economic growth thus Barclaycard as a foreign investment stands a chance of growing too. As suggested by Oââ¬â¢H agan, 1995 Ireland has one of the stable political statuses since the end of conflicts in Northern Ireland. Such an environment is a boost to the firmââ¬â¢s quest to enter the market. It is no doubt that the there are evidences of high level of investments. The ability of the country to attract foreign direct investment will definitely propel the firm to greater height. It is worth noting that the market is made up of well educated workforces who are inexpensive and capable of speaking English. This will make the firm comfortably do business. The government is also less bureaucratic. Weaknesses The country has one of the worst infrastructural developments. This will hinder transportation as well as movement of goods and services. There is need for the state to improve internal transportation to facilitate movement of human, goods and services. The foreign direct investment policy that favor foreign firms to invest in the county will flood the market with firms that provide simila r services like those offered by Barclaycard watering down the market.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More According to Hill Westbrook, 1997 the older population of Irish people are not adequately educated; having in mind that they are the ones having various investments and money they may not be in a position to embrace use o credit cards. Additionally, the country heavily depend on foreign firms which is very risky if there will be reduced international trade negatively affecting domestic industries. Similarly, the location of the country makes it to be in a remote region compared to other European population. This is a serious disadvantage to Barclaycard as it will have a limited market size or scale. There is a higher rate of inflation in Dublin area and this will make it expensive to do business. There is need to rebalance economic growth of this region. Opportunities The government has given room for her respective department to change laws that seem to hinder international trade, there are chances the firm can possibly merge and at the same time acquire other firms to produce a desired synergy that will rock the market (Barclays PLC. 2004). On the same note, there are a growing number of young individuals who are ââ¬Ëtecho-philicââ¬â¢ and will embrace the use of credit cards. Threats Economic crunch or crisis is one serious threat that faces entirely all business entities Barclaycard not being an exception. There are chances of the firm facing vey stiff competition from organizations that provide similar services to the public (Oââ¬â¢Hagan, 1995). References Barclays PLC. 2004. Annual Report. Canadian Parliament Buildings Fire of 1916
Canadian Parliament Buildings Fire of 1916 While World War I was raging in Europe, the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa caught fire on a freezing February night in 1916. With the exception of the Library of Parliament, the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings was destroyed and seven people died. Rumors were rife that the Parliament Buildings fire was caused by enemy sabotage, but a Royal Commission into the fire concluded that the cause was accidental. Date of the Parliament Buildings Fire February 3, 1916 Location of the Parliament Buildings Fire Ottawa, Ontario Background of the Canadian Parliament Buildings The Canadian Parliament Buildings consist of the Centre Block, the Library of Parliament, the West Block and the East Block. The Centre Block and Library of Parliament sit at the highest point on Parliament Hill with a steep escarpment down to the Ottawa River at the back. The West Block and East Block sit down the hill on each side at the front of the Centre Block with a large grassy expanse in the middle. The original Parliament Buildings were built between 1859 and 1866, just in time to be used as the seat of government for the new Dominion of Canada in 1867. Cause of the Parliament Buildings Fire The exact cause of the Parliament Buildings fire was never pinpointed, but the Royal Commission investigating the fire ruled out enemy sabotage. Fire safety was inadequate in the Parliament Buildings and the most likely cause was careless smoking in the House of Commons Reading Room. Casualties in the Parliament Buildings Fire Seven people died in the Parliament Buildings fire: Two guests of House Speaker Albert Sà ©vigny and his wife returned to get their fur coats and were found dead in a corridor.A policeman and two government employees were crushed by a fallen wall.Bowman Brown Law, the Liberal member of parliament for Yarmouth, Nova Scotia died near the House of Commons Reading Room. The body of Renà © Laplante, Assistant Clerk of the House of Commons, was found in the building two days after the fire. Summary of the Parliament Buildings Fire Shortly before 9 p.m. on February 3, 1916, a member of parliament noticed smoke in the House of Commons Reading Room in the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. The fire quickly raced out of control. The House of Commons was interrupted in the middle of a debate on fish marketing.Prime Minister Robert Borden was in his office when he was alerted to the fire. He escaped down a messengers stairway through thick smoke and flames. His office was badly damaged, but some papers on his desk were not touched.Major-General Sam Hughes, who was down the street at the Chà ¢teau Laurier hotel when he heard about the fire, called in the local 77th Battalion to provide crowd control and help with the evacuation. At 9:30 p.n. the roof of the House of Commons collapsed.Senators and soldiers rescued some historic paintings from the Senate before the fire spread to it.By 11:00 p.m. the Victoria Clock Tower had caught on fire, and by midnight the clock was silent. At 1:21 a.m. the tower fell.By 3:00 a.m. the fire was mostly under control, although there was another outbreak the next morning. The Centre Block was a smoking shell filled with icy rubble, with the exception of the Library of Parliament. The Library of Parliament had been built with iron safety doors, which were slammed shut against the fire and smoke. A narrow corridor separating the Library from the Centre Block also contributed to the Librarys survival. After the fire, the Victoria Memorial Museum (now the Canadian Museum of Nature)à cleared its exhibition galleries to make room for parliamentarians to meet and work. On the morning after the fire, the museums auditorium was converted into a temporary House of Commons Chamber, and that afternoon, members of parliament conducted business there.Rebuilding the Parliament Buildings began quickly even though there was a war on. The first parliament sat in the new building on February 26th, 1920, although the Centre Block wasnt completed until 1922. The Peace Tower was finished by 1927. College Essay Ideas Once you have finished generating some preliminary ideas for your essay, developing an outline is the next step. Developing an outline will save you time and aggravation by helping you to organize your ideas and create a structure. There are many ways to order details, and here are three common ones: Chronological order: arranges details across time. This method is useful for crafting a narrative, but it can also be used for ordering the details of a process. Spatial order: arranges details as they appear across space; i.e. from front to back, top to bottom, left to right. Progressive order: arrange details from the least to the most important, compelling, interesting, etc. This order is very useful for argumentation-persuasion papers because it helps you lead up to a final main point that will convince your reader. Many students avoid the outlining process because they believe it only involves the very formal outline with roman numerals and letters. For very formal research papers, this outline can be very helpful. There are other, less formal options, however. In a few minutes, youll see some different ways to structure your outline. First, though, you should note the following guidelines for writing an outline: Develop a working thesis. The working thesis is not set in stone, and you can feel free to revise it as you write. Consider your context. Remember the ideas covered in lesson 1. You should always consider your purpose, audience, and role. Be flexible: As you develop your outline, you may notice that you develop new ideas or that some of your original ideas no longer fit. Again, feel free to revise the outline as you move through the process. Return to idea generation, if necessary. If you notice that you are having significant difficulties coming up with an outline, it could signify you have not yet developed enough ideas. The role of society in human life in the Confucian, and Taoist belief Term Paper
The role of society in human life in the Confucian, and Taoist belief systems - Term Paper Example Though quite alike, the differences in the role of society in Confucian versus Taoist beliefs are most strongly focused around how interpersonal relationships are cultivated, structured and developed. The basic notion of Confucianism is the achievement of jen, which is developing a sympathetic concern for other human beings in society. Loyal and moral relationships act as the foundation for quality socialization under this philosophy. The Confucian Golden Rule is to treat others as you yourself would be treated (Henslin, 547). These basic beliefs related to jen are noticeable in the professional and personal lifestyles of those who have molded their value systems around traditional Confucian beliefs. In the workplace, Confucian values drive progressive policies that gain commitment and support from lower-level employees through a transformational leadership design. For example, wise thought and action for leader roles includes corporate citizenship and philanthropy, democratization of the workplace through less control systems, and maintaining an ethical model of behavior (Hays, 78). In societies where business leaders maintain Confucianism as the heart of their lifestyle beliefs , decentralized decision-making hierarchies are present and employees are much more engaged in development programs, thereby being more committed to achieving business goals. At the interpersonal level, life in Confucian belief systems involves having a duty and responsibility for others. In particular, friendships and family are significantly important. In family and social relationships, tolerance, establishment of mutual dialogue, and new innovative thoughts in replacement of old methods are embraced (Zhang & Veenhoven, 428). To be actively involved in social relationships when carrying a Confucian value system means to reflect upon the self each day, searching for
